Polarized Sunglasses
Driving, boating, fishing and sports are some of the many practical uses for polarized sunglasses. Below I'll explain how polarization works and how it can benefit you when you purchase a pair of polarized sunglasses.

How polarized sunglasses work.
Some surfaces like water or shiny metal or even glass can at times reflect large amounts of light into your eyes. This causes your eye not to visualize objects very well in those areas. The bright spots are distracting and can even conceal some objects from view that may be behind the bright light. Polarized sunglasses can completely remove this type of glare from your field of view using polarization.
This glare often comes from horizontal surfaces such as highways, water surfaces or even the hood of your car. If light hits a surface, the light waves are polarized to match the angle of the surface that was hit. In this case, we’ll use the lake which is horizontal. So the light bounces off the surface and is now horizontally polarized. Polarized sunglasses lenses are fixed at an angle that allows the vertically polarized light waves to go on through to your eyes. This allows you to ‘see’ past the glare. Really the glare just bounces off your sunglasses lens.
How to test for polarized lenses.
Before you put on the polarized sunglasses that you want to test, find a lake or a body of water and stand in a position where the sun is shining very brightly off the water surface and is almost to bright to look at. Now put on your polarized sunglasses and look at the same spot. Rotate your head to the left and to the right slowly while continuing to stare at the spot. You will find the glare is cutting in and out and in some cases, the lens will go completely dark. If you notice the lens gets light and darker or the glare cuts down, then you have just successfully confirm that your sunglasses are indeed polarized.
Uses for fisherman and boaters.
As you no doubt have guessed, polarized sunglasses are very popular amongst boaters and fisherman. Boaters can cut through glare and see more clearly where they are boating as to avoid obstacles and fisherman can cut the glare off the water and perhaps see the fish through the water as they are reeling it in. You can cast further and see how far each cast go’s as you can see the fly or the lure hit the water with ease.
Uses for sports
Every now and again you will see a sports player on TV or playing right on the soccer or baseball field wearing a pair of polarized sunglasses. Yes that’s right, you can bet they are polarized sunglasses that the players cut sunlight out of the game for additional leverage. If you want the best possible game then it’s very important to at least consider trying them for a week of play. Go for a full month of game time with your polarized sunglasses on. Then take them off after a full month of wearing them everywhere you go. You’ll see a big difference in the way light is perceived by your eyes. See the bottom of the page on where you can find your very own pair of genuine polarized sunglasses without spending a whole lot.
